A sensational strike from a freekick by Bayisenge Emery in the 15th minute was all the hosts needed to claim all three points in the opening game of the tournament.
In the other group game, there was no separating Gabon and Morocco as the shoreline remained 0 – 0 after 90 minutes.
As a result, tournament hosts Rwanda are seated comfortably on top of Group A with three points, while Gabon and Morocco are joint-second with 1 point apiece, as Cote d’Ivoire are rooted to the fourth position on the log.
Action continues at the tournament on Sunday January 17, as DR Congo will look to defeat Ethiopia, while Angola take-on Cameroon later in the day in Group B fixtures.
The home based Super Eagles of Nigeria will file out against the Menas of Niger on Monday January 18 in the second Group C fixture; Tunisia and Guinea will slug it out in the first match of the same day.
